Boom One recording artist and electronic producer Piper Street Sound continues his freight-train-on-fire release schedule with this collection of masterful Dub Reggae mixes.
Already known as a genre-weaving purveyor of multicultural, intricate EDM, the Atlanta-based multi-instrumentalist has made a name for himself on the global bass music stage for his unique, exquisitely detailed albums focusing largely on electronic expressions of folkloric Afro-Latin traditions. Underneath all that, however, lies the heart of a Dubwise master, with years of studying the rich history of Jamaican music. Long before making himself known as Piper Street Sound- Producer Extraordinaire, a young Matt Mansfield was making his way out of the punk days of his youth and seeking his true voice behind the board. The bridge from there to here was his love for Ska, Reggae, and all of the music of Jamaica. By poring over records and books, and playing with/recording several progressively more technical Reggae projects, Mansfield honed his skill and developed a solid point of reference on Jamaican music. By intensive research and the benefit of a huge roster of guests and friendly performers, PSS became able to not only identify exactly which legendary producer made which sounds-down to knowledge of facilities and microphones used, but to also mimic, invoke, and ultimately embody the sounds of several of Jamaica’s most legendary producers.Through
his own projects, working with his label Boom One Records and especially through the budding of his business producing and recording out of Piper Street Studios in Atlanta, Mansfield has come into contact with many, MANY artists. A parade of Reggae artists and performers such as King Rat, Electric Roots Ensemble, DubConscious, Kingston vocalist Solution, Nevis islander Iyah Levi, members of Lloyd’s Rocksteady Revue, Melame Gange, Jack Fivecoate and many more have come through the studio, sharpening Mansfield’s skills as a hands-on session producer and dub engineer, but also leaving behind an enormous library of alternate takes, epic performances, and super strong basic riddims. It is from that cache of material that PSS has drawn this collection of true Dub tunes. Taken from various singles produced in-house featuring backing performances by Mansfield’s enormous sphere of collaborative musicians collectively referred to as the “Piper Street All-Stars” as well as other bands, these 13 pieces reflect the return-to-form of the Dub producer at his most dubbiest. Those familiar with Piper Street Sound’s work already know of his bewildering mastery of f/x and immaculate production values. Lovers of Dub and Reggae will thrill to the elegant simplicity of those skills applied lovingly to the producer’s “home genre”.
With so many influences and textures to his work, PSS’s tunes can have an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-but-also-two-kitchen-sinks feel. It is a remarkable breath of fresh air when a highly skilled multi-national fusion producer returns to what he loves, and does that one single thing with clarity and precision.
